Opened to the public in 1994 it is, at present, one of the most important Portuguese libraries in the field of the perfoming arts, with over 35.000 monographs and circa 600 titles of periodicals. The general catalogue of the library, initially typed and organised just by author (monographs) and per title (periodical publications), is partially computerised. The research can be carried out by author, title, subject, quota, collection, date of publication, date of cataloguing and type of document. Many of these works are first or rare editions, frequently annotated by the author or by the producer, autographed with a dedication; this means they are a valuable bibliographic patrimony. Therefore, there is no free access to the bookshelves or a lending system. However, the users do have access to almost all of the works that constitute the library’s collection, by catalogue selection and only for local consultation. They can also consult other types of documents that constitute special collections, such as, for example, the theatre programmes collection.
